US Unemployment Claims Jump to 898,000

According to this morning’s US Department of Labor report, states saw an additional 898,000 Americans file first-time unemployment insurance claims last week. That represents an increase of 53,000 from the previous week. The increase broke a four-week trend of decreases for the number of new claims.

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending October 3 were in Florida (+9,933), Illinois (+6,877), Massachusetts (+4,021), North Carolina (+2,907), and Maryland (+1,714), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-3,504), Kansas (-3,312), Pennsylvania (-3,111), Louisiana (-2,835), and Washington (-2,474).

Germany Leads PMI Charge For September

While Euro Area manufacturing had a strong performance in September with a PMI reading 53.7 percent, German manufacturers led the charge with a 4.2 percent increase over August to hit a IHS Markit/BME reported figure of 56.4 percent. That represented the best expansion in the sector since July 2018 while the new order growth figure was among the strongest reported months since 1996. Improved demand across Europe, China and Turkey also saw new export orders reach the highest level for Germany since December 2017.

Hillbrush Makes Further Injection Moulding Investment

Hillbrush, the UK’s largest manufacturer of brushware and hygienic cleaning tools has invested in a second large-scale injection moulding machine at its site at Mere in Wiltshire, U.K.

The 1000 tonne Haitian MARS 2 injection moulding machine will enable Hillbrush to venture into new trade moulding business, fulfilling larger tooling projects that the company would otherwise have to outsource, such as snow shovels, warning A-frame signs, multi-impression dustpans and buckets.
